So here it is! The start of the competition Hummingbirdie.
I’m pretty happy with how this little guy is coming along.
Mind you, it’s taken me a couple of half finished sketches, that have been tossed around my studio floor (that’s my filing) and a gazillion lemongrass teas to even get to this stage.
I think at some stage it would be great to share all my half un-finished drawings, that way people can see the extent of the processes it takes to get to just this stage.
We as the public, generally only get see completed artwork by artists, illustrators and designers published in mags, books etc… And think, ‘gosh that’s impressive how BRILLIANT IS THAT ARTIST! I wish I could create amazingness like that.‘
But sometimes we forget that it takes, even the most respected artists, dedication, research and drawing after drawing to finish with something incredible. I think we need to embrace all the uncompleted drawings we do, it’s all apart of a bigger picture. That’s one positive thing I like about the interweb (internet) it’s a great source to see share our experiences, process and methods. Blogs are fantastic for this. Lets keep sharing! Here here!
=^_^=
Yikes, rambles they were, hopefully helpful ones.
I hope everyone has a grand weekend.
I hope to get down to the Salamanca markets and buy heaps of vegies to make abundances of soup.

Study of Anna’s Hummingbird
April 28th, 2010 | 1 comment
This is a study of a hummingbird that I have done thus far! Not to sure about the composition, still needs work .
Anna is a type of Hummingbird it has purple/redish iridescent feathers at the front of it’s body. I thought I’d draw this particular type as it also has lovely green iridescent feathers on it’s back. Which I hope to portray in the final image, somehow! YIKES! Got lots of work ahead of me.
I think for the final piece which, I will start on later on in the week, will be one in a flying position. But we’ll see.
I hope everyone is having a great week.
Mines already better than last week. I was really sick and there was loads of things to do in the Floatingworld HQ. So what does one do when they feel like pooh… goes etsy shopping. I found some shoes, now I just have to wait for them to arrive!
AND… for all those who went into my comp I have the cards in my little hands but I’m still waiting on the envelopes to arrive. Hopefully, I’ll be able to take some pics to show you what you’ll be getting.
Please vote for our design.

Fallen Hummingbirds
April 21st, 2010 | 1 comment
I know a little disturbing posting about dead things.
But how incredible are these images! I found them while doing research on Hummingbirds.
I was struck by the beauty captured in the images, much so that I had to share them.
The composition is pretty incredible as well.
Not to mention the sheen and simmer of the feathers.
I hope to capture some of this magical beauty in the image that I produce for Bec.
These images are from flickr.
A lady named Liz (a.k.a: photoartist3) took these photos. Unfortunately I don’t know much more about her, other than she has many more brilliant shots. See for yourself. x
I hope everyone is having a brill day. I have been feeling a tad under the weather of late. I’ve had a few days at home recuperating, which has been nice. I think this afternoon if I’m up to it I’ll start Bec’s image. I’m way to excited to leave it for much longer.

YAY! Congratulations Bec and the bird that I’ll be illustrating is a Hummingbird.
Thanks to all that entered my little comp and to show my appreciation I’m going to send everyone that entered 5 x little birdy cards illustrated by me. All I need to know is where you would like them to be delivered. So if you could all send me an email with your postal address to hello[at]beth-emily.com and I’ll send them out in the next week or so.
Bec if you could contact me via hello[at]beth-emily.com that would be swell.
I’ll post the progress of the illustration on my blog so you can all see.

In the interest of keeping things exciting and fun!
I’ve decided that it be lovely to share the process of creating an image with you guys. It’s a little thank you for being involved in my blog.
So if you have a spare moment post what kind of bird you’d like to see me draw, with my good hand of course. I’ll put all the entries into a big hat and pick out a winner. YAY!
I’ll draw the chosen image, add a couple of little drawn embellishment here and there. When the image is finished I’ll send you a printed version for FREE. I’ll even write you a little personal something on the back. I’ll put the image on etsy to sell as well so others can enjoy our creation.
I’ll draw the name of the winner and the bird of choice in a weeks time.
Good Luck. x

Nin went to the vet today! For a free cat which we acquired from a garage sale, you’d think she would have behavioral issues, but she’s pretty well behaved.
Bloesem Kids Competition

Finished artwork for competition
Detail of artwork
Hello, two posts in one day! Wow.
I just wanted to share the artwork that I entered in the Bloesem kids competition.
The lovely Irene from Bloesem ran a competition for her kids blog to design a head banner. You can see all the entries here. I must admit I got a bit carried away, but in a good way as this comp was a lot of fun.
As you will notice, the artwork I produced is a little different to my usual style. I kept in mind that this is for a completely different audience for whom I usually draw for. Irene sees her blogs and content that she selects to feature as ‘everything that makes me happy, smile, and enjoy life…’ so I interpreted this visually through the line work, colours, subject matter and the over all composition.
It was certainly a challenge but well worth it. I hope you like : )
